Heliconia (Delivery May to October)
These plants almost shout the word exotic with their large leaves and bright coloured flowers. Please don’t forget that you can grow Heliconia from seed and I have grown some useful 3ft Rostrata and 6ft Latispatha plants from seed to flowering size. We have expanded our range of these popular plants for 2009 and most should be available in sufficient quantity apart from the “Limited Editions”

Heliconia aurantiaca
Limited Availability 3 Litre Plants £39.00 JP2244 |
||
|
A smaller species to 3 ft, with a compact, relatively small, erect bright yellow to orange inflorescence. Found in the forest understory, usually on limestone based soils. Looks to be a good subject for pot growing under glass in the UK but not one of the hardiest forms. |

Heliconia latispatha Gold 3 Litre Plants £39.00 JP289 |
||
|
One of the hardiest
Heliconia and one of the easiest to over winter in cooler conditions
(relative term easiest as all require warm winter temperatures). A very
large tough Heliconia that we have flowering at about 6ft to 8ft from 3
year old seed grown plants. We now sell two variants from division, this
one is very similar to the "Mexican Gold" hybrid and nearly all a bright
gold yellow. Both reliably flower each summer given a large pot. |

|
One of the hardiest
Heliconia and one of the easiest to over winter in cooler conditions
(relative term easiest as all require warm winter temperatures). A very
large tough Heliconia that we have flowering at about 6ft to 8ft from 3
year old seed grown plants. We now sell two variants from division, this
one is very similar to the "Orange Gyro" hybrid with red and
yellow flowers and red tinted stems at the base. Both reliably flower
each summer given a large pot. |

|
Heliconia psittacorum 3 Litre Plants £29.00 JP2463 |
||
|
A taller species of
Heliconia with bright yellow flowers in mid summer on large banana like
leaves. Between 6ft to 7ft tall and more robust than ‘Golden Girl’ to
over winter. Stock originally grown from our seeds and now flowering
after 3 years. |

Heliconia psittacorum "Golden Girl" 3 Litre Plants £29.00 JP693 |
||
|
Another smaller
Heliconia with bright yellow to orange flowers on good light green
foliage. Between 2ft to 5ft tall, depending on light and heat
conditions. Not as hardy as Latispatha or as vigorous but a useful size
for pot culture and our plants seem to flower each year once large
enough. |

Heliconia rostrata 3 Litre Plants £45.00 JP274 |
||
|
Another smaller
Heliconia with bright yellow to orange flowers on good light green

Heliconia schiedeana 3 Litre Plants £45.00 JP2464 |
||
|
A medium sized
Heliconia that reaches between 4ft and 8 ft tall with upright
inflorescences of bright red bracts and yellow flowers in summer. Native
to southern Mexico, it is one of the hardiest Heliconias and one of the
few that will succeed in cooler climates and easier to over winter under
cool glasshouse conditions with a minimum of 10°C. It was originally
collected from northern Mexico at high elevation and flowering typically
occurs from December through to August. |

|
|
Heliconia stricta Dwarf Jamaican 3 Litre Plants £26.95 JP1074 |
||
|
Most Heliconia are tall
plants, some to 15ft tall before flowering, but there are a few more
manageable for pot growing given enough heat. This one as far as I know
is the smallest flowering at only 2ft. The flowers or bracts stay fresh
for some time on the plant before fading maybe after a month. Ideal for
bringing in doors to a warm sunny location before returning to its warm
humid permanent position in a greenhouse (best with bottom heat) during
winter. Many of our sale plants come into flower from November to
December. |
