Gingers (Delivery May to Sep)
Tropical Gingers from Jungle Plants, are another favourite of mine which I have been growing for about 30 years and in particular the Hedychiums. The strong rhizomatic root systems throw annual shoots to 6 ft topped by a dense head of flowers in late summer which look and smell gorgeous. They are hardier than most people realise and given a warm south facing wall with a protective mulch in winter, they will survive reasonable frosts. However because of our short growing season they may not reach flowering maturity outside, unless in a hot sun pocket. The alternative is to dig them up and place into large pots for late flowering and over wintering under glass in a frost free greenhouse or conservatory and started into growth in early spring.

Costus Barbatus 3 Litre plants £24.95 JP1538 |
A very beautiful and spectacular rare perennial ginger from South America with spiral arranged leaves. Grows up 4’ to 7’ tall and has large green leaves. It has yellow and red flower inflorescences to 12” tall that remain in flower all summer. Can tolerate cool conditions over winter and very fast growing but the flowers are produced on the previous years growth. We also sell mature 5ft plants in 3 litre pots with several stems which will flower in 2006. |
Costus Speciosa 3 Litre plants £19.95 JP1888 |
A tall spiral type ginger very similar to the Costus barbatus plants that we sell but this one has large 4" white crepe type flowers that emerge from the central cone. A tough fairly hardy ginger at the root level and easy to grow with attractive tropical leaves. New shoots emerge from the root stock at regular intervals and in the tropics it would create a 3ft wide 8ft tall clump in a year! In pots it is much more manageable flowering at around 4ft at the end of the current years shoots. |
Costus speciosus variegatus 1 Litre plants £24.95 JP2571 |
A beautiful variegated form of the spiral ginger that we sell with large 4" white crepe type flowers that emerge from the central cone. More tender than the type needing cool to warm greenhouse or conservatory conditions. New shoots emerge from the root stock at regular intervals and in the tropics it would create a 3ft wide 4ft tall clump in a year. |

Hedychium aurantiacum 3 Litre plants £11.35 JP462 |
Another fairly hardy
form of coccinea with salmon flower heads. The growth habit is much
finer than Tara, with thinner leaves and stems. As a bonus the stems
have red markings rather than plain green, which adds to this
attraction. The flowers though do not match up in any way to Tara or any
of the hybrid gingers but an excellent species ginger |

Hedychium Brandie Saito 3 Litre plants £16.25 JP2252 |
A beautiful white
hybrid with large Luna Moth type flowers but in larger clusters, with
the scent of coranarium! Flowers reasonably short at 4ft to 5ft. |
Hedychium Carnival 3 Litre plants £11.35 JP2012 |
A brand new ginger from
the Jungle team. This attractive hybrid has bright crimson stems at the
base, flowers relatively early for gingers in September with full, quite
large, long lasting apricot flower heads. Flowering height is manageable
at 3ft to 4ft with a good clumping habit, but sadly with minimal scent.

Hedychium coccineum 3 Litre plants £16.25 JP461 |
A brand new ginger from
the Jungle team. This attractive hybrid has bright crimson stems at the
base, flowers relatively early for gingers in September with full, quite
large, long lasting apricot flower heads. Flowering height is manageable
at 3ft to 4ft with a good clumping habit, but sadly with minimal scent.

Hedychium coronarium 3 Litre plants £11.35 JP125 |
The white butterfly
ginger which like most of the hedychiums has a beautiful fragrance but
this one smells of Gardenias and is used in the perfume industry. Fairly
root hardy growing to 5ft with the flowers on terminal spikes in late
summer. Prefers partial shade but can take full sun with ample moisture.
Probably best over wintered in a frost free area, either dormant or
preferably kept growing into the following year. This plant will need a
large pot to flower well.

Hedychium Dave Case 3 Litre plants £11.35 JP1095 |
A tall plant to 7ft
topped with a 10” spike of many pure orange medium sized flowers. It
blooms from August through October. A Tom Wood hybrid.
Hedychium densifolium Assam Orange 3 Litre plants £16.25 JP460 |
A smaller Ginger hardy in all parts of the UK at the root level. Treat it as a clumping border perennial plant when each year it will throw 3ft spikes topped by orange flower spikes about 4" long in August/September. Excellent for a ginger alternative that does not take up the same space as the taller varieties. |
Hedychium Devon Cream 3 Litre plants £16.25 JP1765 |
A wonderful hybrid of Coronarium and the Kahili ginger with extravagant scent on large flower heads similar to Gardenarium but with pale cream larger flowers influenced by Coronarium. Flowers early and at a sensible 3ft height on a strong plant. Originally sold as Hedychium Great Dixter but now renamed as Devon Cream. |
Hedychium Double Eagle 3 Litre plants £11.35 JP1089 |
A lovely ginger from the Jungle team with unique, coppery coloured flowers on 5ft to 6ft plants. Unusual delicious spicy fragrance. |
Hedychium Dr Moy 3 Litre plants £11.35 JP580 |
An attractive ginger with pale orange flowers and variegated foliage. Variegation takes the form of white streaky flecks in the leaves. |

Hedychium Elizabeth 3 Litre plants £11.35 JP128 |
A tall, gorgeous pink ginger, with 6ft to 8ft delicate stems. Be patient though as you will need an established plant in a large pot for successful flowering. It is the best pink form available with almost raspberry colouring and attractive foliage. |
Hedychium ellipticum 3 Litre plants £16.25 JP581 |
A shade loving very exotic Hedychium bearing magnificent terminal inflorescences densely packed with white flowers and long orange filaments. A very unusual ginger flower but does not do well in full sun. |
Hedychium filigree 3 Litre plants £11.35 JP1088 |
A short Tom Wood hybrid to 3ft and multiple stems with medium sized fragrant yellow to gold blossoms. Our shortest Hedychium that we sell with established plants flowering early from August under glass or outside. A good ginger plant for containers and for permanent planting outside in a sheltered sunny position. |
Hedychium flavescens 3 Litre plants £11.35 JP126 |
Tall strong stems to 7ft with more slender 4" leaves but very leafy growth giving an excellent tropical effect when not in flower. Often used for perfume because of it's strong heady scent. The flowers are pale yellow with slightly smaller flower heads than gardnerianum but a beautiful delicate flower and attractive bold plant that is well worth trying. |
![]() |
Hedychium forrestii 3 Litre plants £16.25 JP428 |
Perhaps the hardiest of the large flowered gingers with a limited scent growing to 6ft tall. Soon forms a spreading clump in the garden making it a good choice for anyone attempting a hardy tropical border. Largish heads of white flowers are produced on terminal spikes of lush tropical looking foliage. This is a big ginger plant and very robust. |
Hedychium gardnerianum 3 Litre plants £16.25 JP127 |
Still my favourite ginger lily with huge inflorescences of bright golden yellow, scarlet stamens and a fantastic perfume. Flowers easily once the root stock is filling a 10” pot or larger and fed regularly with plenty of sun. Sensible height for an hedychium flowering at 3 to 4ft. |
Hedychium Gold Flame 3 Litre plants £11.35 JP1091 |
A vigorous plant with erect fragrant white flowers and burnt gold centres. Height to 5’. An outstanding butterfly type hybrid rapidly gaining popularity. Medium shade. |
Hedychium Gold Spot 3 Litre plants £11.35 JP2011 |
One of my favourite large flowered hybrids. Identical in all characteristics to Coronarium apart from the gold throat in the flower. It has been propagated from a plant originally found in a private garden in India. We were made over with the quality and size of the flowers and strong scent during our 2006 trials of these rhizomes and now have plenty of plants for sale. |
Hedychium greenii 3 Litre plants £11.35 JP529 |
A lovely plant for both flower and foliage. Quite hardy in some areas so worth a try outdoors, but the flowers are quite late into September. The bonus for this plant is the strong clumping nature with many new spikes emerging during the summer. The glossy dark green leaves have a maroon reverse with a hint of maroon also developing in the new stems. It produces the flower bracts early enough but it can take a further month for the striking orange/red flowers to emerge. |
Hedychium grifithianum 3 Litre plants £11.35 JP814 |
A fairly new ginger into the U.K. from Himalaya, and probably hardy in mild areas but best grown under cover to accommodate the late flowers. These are borne in attractive spidery white cluster with salmon filaments carrying a mild scent in the evenings. A delicate shorter thin leaved variety to 3ft. |
Hedychium kinkaku 3 Litre plants £11.35 JP1097 |
Another excellent hybrid, ‘Kinkaku’ has lovely large pale shell pink blooms with a darker orange throat and pink-orange stamens. Flowers from July through October given an early start. Grows in light shade to full sun, 4-5 feet tall. A really pretty ginger. |
Hedychium lemon sherbert 3 Litre plants £11.35 JP1092 |
A tall robust ginger to 8ft but our plants start flowering at 6ft outside given plenty of light. Lovely pale yellow flowers with contrasting pink stamens on large flower heads. |
Hedychium Luna Moth 3 Litre plants £11.35 JP1082 |
A Tom Wood superb white hybrid ginger with huge white moth type flowers
and a beautiful fragrance. Shorter flowering at 1 metre than Coronarium
and therefore more suitable for conservatory pot growing. The other
advantage is the repeat flowering nature of this plant from the central
calyx over at least a four to five week period, where other Hedychiums
generally open up their flowering spike from bottom to top and then
finish flowering within a week. Not suitable for permanent garden use
and slight shade suits it best under glass. |
![]() |
Hedychium maximum 3 Litre plants £16.25 JP1096 |
One of the largest Hedychiums similar in growth to Flavescens, but even
more robust. Mainly grown for foliage effect but it has pretty pale
lemon scented flowers on giant 8ft stems. |
Hedychium pink flame 3 Litre plants £11.35 JP2482 |
An excellent 4ft Tom Wood hybrid, flowering from late August onwards
with clusters of peachy pink flowers with a wide dark orange throat. The
extremely fragrant flowers add to the attraction when brought in to
conservatories during our Autumn. |
![]() |
Hedychium Pink V 3 Litre plants £11.35 JP2013 |
A very popular hybrid butterfly ginger bred by Tom Wood to about 6 feet
tall with a light citrus like scent. Pale lemon pink flowers with a
deeper pink "V" in the throat. |
![]() |
Hedychium pradhan 3 Litre plants £16.25 JP1093 |
A very vigorous (8ft tall!) and large Hedychium may be worth trying out
of doors just for the amazing tropical foliage effect. Its is probably
too late in flowering to get flowers outside but under cover we had it
flowering at 7ft with beautiful scented large white flowers with a hint
of pink. |
Hedychium raffillii 3 Litre plants £19.45 JP1317 |
A 1941 Award of Garden Merit (AGM) winner. For us, this cross is one of
the earliest gingers to flower along with “Tara”, often starting in
early to mid-July. Hybridized by C.P. Raffill, former assistant curator
at Kew Gardens, the 5-6’ tall sturdy clumps are topped with large 18”
flower heads of fragrant brilliant orange flowers, but to me almost
identical to Tara. |
![]() |
Hedychium samsheri 3 Litre plants £11.35 JP1094 |
A 5ft to 6ft tall Tom Wood hybrid from Chandra Nursery in Sikkim, India,
imported in 1952, pink flowered, sometimes confused with the Japanese
Hybrid “Kinkaku” but they are not the same. |
Hedychium Stephen 3 Litre plants £16.25 JP1547 |
This lovely fully hardy ginger collected by Tony Schilling in Nepal, and
is closely related to densiflorum. However the flowers are much larger
than densiflorum, cream with orange, with a delightful hyacinth
fragrance. |
Hedychium Tara 3 Litre plants £16.125 JP739 |
A hybrid of Coccineum which has scarlet red flowers on a large flower
head. It is one of the first to flower, one of the hardiest and grows
7ft tall flowering spikes. The scent is not as strong as some ginger
flowers but nevertheless quite distinctive and fragrant and the only
red ginger to have a decent scent. These plants will reach 6ft this
season if planted in a good rich compost. Our best selling Ginger! |
Hedychium Verity 3 Litre plants £21.95 JP1313 |
Improved Dr Moy. One plant out of a batch of Dr Moy micro liners we
received a few years ago had significantly improved variegation. We
propagate this plant ourselves by division and now have enough for sale.
It has pale orange to cream scented flowers and is a hybrid of
Coranarium and Coccineum. Striking variegation on a 5ft very robust
plant with a hint of maroon on the back of new leaves that we have named
“Verity”. |
Hedychium Wardii 3 Litre plants £21.95 JP1084 |
A stunning butterfly type ginger with bright yellow flowers closely
related to forrestii and potentially hardy. Repeat flowering nature over
3 to 4 weeks and nicely scented. A very robust ginger with massive
rhizomes, leaves and stems to 4ft. Like all butterfly gingers the
flowers look better under glass or in dry weather. Can be tricky to grow
successfully. |

Hedychium yunnanense 3 Litre plants £16.25 JP1083 |
A shade and humidity loving hardy ginger from the Himalaya, only growing
to 2ft and scented with lush foliage. Will also grow in full to partial
sun with early flowering habit right through to the first frosts. |
