Malvaviscus arboreus
Turk's Cap Hibiscus
n£

1 Litre Plant £19.95   JP3041

Quantity:

This unusual attractive plant is an autumn and winter blooming relative of the Hibiscus. The bright 3" long scarlet red flowers are pendulous and last for several days but the petals do not flare back like Hibiscus, but remain swirled around the pistil. This gives the impression that the flowers never open, and hence the common name of Sleeping Hibiscus AKA Turk's Cap or Lipstick Hibiscus. It is a large soft wood shrub fast growing to eight foot tall by six foot wide but can be kept to size if pot grown by pruning. A native of Mexico it flowers best in full sun, but will tolerate light shade. We saw this plant all over Grenada and Tobago where its used as hedging.

Megaskepasma erythrochlamys
Brazilian Red Cloak
n£

1 Litre Plant £29.95   JP2388

Quantity:

This showy, tropical shrub with a grotesque botanical name occurs naturally in Venezuela. The showy ‘flower’ consists of red bracts surrounding the true white flower, a magnificent shrub to 10ft, but containable as a warm conservatory exotic if pruned. Our stock plants all flowered profusely from August to October - very rare in the UK.

Murraya koenigii
The Curry Leaf Plant
n£

1 Litre Plant £26.95   JP2278

Quantity:

We have a few plants grown from seed a few years ago of the Curry-leaf tree. A native of India and Sri Lanka, it is a small tree suitable for pot culture with very pungent aromatic leaves. The leaves are used in curries. Flowers late spring to early summer with small white flowers, 5/16 of an inch across and are sweetly scented.

Murraya koenigii need warm temperatures with full sun to partial shade and a well draining loam based compost mix. The compost should be allowed to thoroughly dry between waterings. Fertilize weekly during the growing season and do not let the winter temperature fall below 18c° when watering should be very light. A small tree perhaps making 4ft in 5 years.

Cape Leadwort
n£

1 Litre Plant £15.95   JP264

A shrubby plant that throws long runners almost like a non clinging climber. If pruned it can be kept to shape and is often used as hedging in the Tropics. These plants are an improved new clone of this plant with darker blue flowers, more shrubby in form, making a compact bush. It is also proving very floriferous and is the only variety offered by us as plants.

It took me a while to identify this pretty robust clumping perennial from Mexico to 5ft tall. Dark green strap leaves with 2” purple flowers on elegant long sprays. Cold hardy to a light frost, but needs full sun to flower.

Ruellia macrantha

Saccharum officinarum violaceum
Purple Sugar Cane
n£

1 Litre Plant £20.95   JP1297

Quantity:

An excellent architectural plant that grows at an astonishing speed to 10ft given enough warmth. It is definitely a lot tougher and cold hardier than the ordinary form with March propagated cuttings already reaching 10ft tall by August under glass and 6ft plus outside. A graceful elegant large grass with purple/green leaves and purple veins that also performed really well as summer bedding in our trials, forming large purple grass clumps to 7ft by August/September. After running trials 2005/2006 to see if this tough plant is winter hardy, we now believe it to be quite tender at the root level and needs a warm winter environment keeping it on the dry side. Much easier to look after though than the tropical green edible form.

If you are into novelties and pampas grass, then this one fits the bill. The course grass like foliage is almost identical to pampas, but with stronger stems. Difficult to over winter below 10C, and can become chloritic in alkaline conditions. One year growth maybe to 5ft in ideal conditions and the suckers can be propagated once the

Strelitzia reginae
Bird of Paradise Flower

3 Litre Plant £18.50   JP1243

Quantity:

This plant is a definite must if you want to grow an exotic plant for the patio with stunning flowers. A tough plant even capable of bearing a few degrees of frost although some leaf damage will be evident, Excellent for a frost free unheated or heated conservatory. These 3 litre plants will need another year or two to come in to flower but well worth the wait and a lot quicker than growing from seed which takes about 6 years to reach flowering size. Eventual height is 4ft to 5ft with a clumping nature requiring a large pot.

Strobilanthes dyerianus
Persian Shield

1 Litre Plant £18.95   JP1772

Quantity:

Persian Shield is among the most sought after foliage plants worldwide. It produces quite unique shimmering iridescent purple coloured metallic looking leaves. I used to grow this many years ago and at last this found a source of plants for sale. Used as a house plant in the UK it is a shade lover but with dappled sunlight the colouring is much stronger. A strong growing plant, in the right conditions it may attain 3 to 5ft and as much wide, it makes an excellent plant for summer shade bedding or placed in a shaded conservatory position. A rare plant so please do not miss out on this opportunity to acquire one.
